Dünyanın en kuzeydeki başkentinde sunuma katılacağım ortaya çıktığında gerçekten şaşırmıştım… Aylardan Mart idi… Soğuk istanbul’u vururken oralarda nasıl olacağını hayal bile edemedim…????

I was so surprised to hear that I would attend a conference in the capital city located in the furthest north of the Earth. It was March…and it was really cold in Istanbul,yet still I could not even imagine what the weather would be like there.

Sonradan internetten yaptığım araştırmalardan sonra 280.000 nüfuslu bu ülkeye görecek olmamdan dolayı ne kadar şanslı olduğumu fark ettim…

After doing some research on the internet about the country which’s population consists of 280.000 people, I realized that I was quite lucky to be given the opportunity to visit it.

Hollanda’dan yaptığımız aktarmada zaten ilk şok Uçakta gerçekleşti… Bir anda kendimi çok modern bir uçakta ama 1965-1975 yılları arasında ABD uçağında hissettim. Tüm kabin görevlileri o seneye ait kıyafetler giyiyorlardı. Dünyanın ilk resmi havayolu olan Icelandair’in aynı zamanda ülkede otelleri bulunmakta. Biz bu otellerden birinde kaldık. Tabi ben odada hava alayım diye camı açıp 2 numaralı pisti görünce küçük bir şok yaşadım…

We experienced our first shock when we were changing our plane in Holland. For a moment I felt like I was flying to USA in a very modern plane between 1965 and 1975. All flight attendants were wearing clothes reflecting those years. Icelandair, which is the first official airline, also owns hotels in different countries. We stayed in one of these hotels. Figuratively speaking,  I had a stroke out of shock because of what I saw when I opened the window of the room to get some air. It was the airstrip number 2….

Dünyanın en küçük ve en az nüfusa sahip ülkelerinden biri olan İzlanda da iç seyahatler sürekli küçük uçaklarla yapılıyor…

In Iceland, which has the least population and is the smallest country in the world, domestic flights are done by aeroplanes.

İzlanda da inanılmaz bir ABD hayranlığı hakim, arabalar, kıyafetler filmler vs. Ülkeye ilk sigarayı getirenler 2. dünya savaşı sırasında ABD askerleri olmuş. Ondan önce sigara nedir bilmeyen halkın gençleri fosur fosur sigara içiyorlar. Osmanlılının 2 defa burayı fethetmeye çalışması da dünyada sevmedikleri ülkelerin başında bizi getiriyor o ayrı. İzlanda da 4 adet Türk bulunuyormuş. Bunlardan 2 tanesi şehrin göbeğinde dönerci dükkanı açan kardeşler; diğeri de dünyayı gezen ve bundan önce 5 yıl kaldığı Avustralya’da +40 derece farkla İzlanda’ya transfer olan bizim otelin restoranındaki şef garsondu. Adamı görür görmez; “merhaba naber abi” dediğimde suratı görülmeye değerdi.

One can observe the great American influence in Iceland or we can call it a great admiration towards American way of life by looking at the cars, clothes and movies and so on. During World War II, cigarettes were brought to the country first by American soldiers.  Since then, the youth in Iceland who did not even know how to hold a cigarette have started to smoke like a chimney. Ottomans attempted to conquer Iceland twice; that’s why, I cannot tell you that Turkish folks are liked most L There are only 4 Turkish people living in Iceland. Two of them are brothers who run a Kebab restaurant in the center of the town. The other two; one is travelling around the world and the other is the chef waiter working at the restaurant of our hotel. He has come to Iceland from Australia, so he has to put up with -40 degree temperature change. Once I saw the man, I said “Hello man! What’s up?” in Turkish, you should have seen the look on his face :)

Rejkavik ülkenin baş şehri ve 170.000 nüfusa sahip. Gündüz boş. Hafta içi boş. Hafta içi gece boş… Cuma Cumartesi gece 11 sabah 8 arası ise sanırım sadece meydandaki nüfus 150.000 civarı. Ben gerçekten hayatımda bu kadar içki içen bu kadar eğlenen ve ertesi gün yok olan bir grup insanı bir arada görmedim… Ülkeye Cuma öğlen akmaya başlayan otobüsler ise şehir meydanında portatif hamburger ve cheeseburger dükkanlarına dönmekte…

Rejkavik is the capital city and its population consists of 170.00 people. Daytime it was like a ghost city; the streets were empty… Weekdays too… Weekdays at nights there was no people around….However, On Friday and Saturday from 8 in the morning till 11 at night, the center of the town bursted at seams. It was like almost all of the counrty’s population gathered in the square (around 150.000 people). The buses starting to come to the country on Firday afternoon turned into portable hamburger and cheeseburger stands at the center…

Akşam dünyanın en güzel av etleri ve deniz ürünlerini tadabileceğiniz çok kalite restoranlar bulunuyor. Tabi sizi bir operatör misafir ettiğinden pahalı akşam yemeğini tatma imkanınız olabiliyor. İzlanda dünyanın Japonya ile beraber en pahalı ülkesi; balıkçılık % 70, turizm ise % 30 ülke getirilerini oluşturmakta… Bir biranın gece 9 euro bir kahvenin 7 euro olduğu, standart bir otelde gece konaklamanın 70-100 eurolardan başladığını hatırlatırım.

You can have your dinner at the restaurants where the best game meat and sea food of the world is served.  If the host is an operator, you get to taste the expensive main course. Iceland along with Japan is the most expensive country in the world; the country’s income consists of fishing( %70) and tourism (%30). I would like to remind you that in a standart hotel where a beer costs 9 euros and a cup of coffee costs 7 euros, it costs you 70-100 euros to stay overnight.

Köpekbalığı kanadı çorbası, sushi, ahtapot, karides kalamar, vs gibi deniz ürünlerinde ben bu ülkenin üstüne yer tanımayacağınızı iddia ederim…

I think there is no better country than Iceland having such a variety of seafood as shark fin soup, sushi, octopus, shrimp, squid …etc.

* Outdoor tur firmaları ile zemini tamamen volkanik olan bu adada dev tekerlekli jeepler ile kar üzerinde ülke turu…

*Have a country tour by jeeps with huge wheels on this island which’s underground is covered with volcano

* Kar motosikletleri ile uçsuz bucaksız karlarda gezmek.

* Ride a snow motorcycle on vast snowy lands

* Üstüne dünyanın harikası sülfür dolu 28 derece yüzebileceğiniz çivit mavisi bluelagoon’a gece ay ışığı altında yüzmek gezmek cildinize iyi gelecek sülfürlerle boğuşmak

*Swim in bluelagoon which is a world wonder filled with sulfur  in the moonlight and wrestle with sulfur, which will be good for your skin.

* Geysir lere gitmek ve 30-45 saniye ya da 3-4 dakikaya varan patlamalarını ve ayağınızın altında titreşimlerini hissetmek.

* Go to Geysir and see explosions lasting 30-45 seconds or 3-4 minutes and feel the earth shaking beneath your feet.

* Soğuk votka içmek- Muhakkak Rejkavikte sabah kadar olan bar gezmelerine katılmak.

*Drink cold Votka and go out at nights without resting till dawn

* Şehir merkezindeki cafelerde zaman geçirmek

*Spend some time in cafés at the center of the city

* Alışveriş etmemeye kalkmak ! (5 adet ufak hediyelik dışında hiç bir şey almadım.)

* Try not to shop (I didn’t buy anything but 5 small presents)

* Take sleeping glasses to be able to sleep if you happen to go there in summer (night time is only 4 hours  a day) and take an alarm clock if it is winter because it is still pitch-dark at 8 oclock in the morning.

* Yazın gitsem kamp yapardım; çünkü havanın temizliğine gökyüzünün ve suların berraklığına inanamayacaksınız…

* Camp there if it is summer time (I would camp if I went there in summer because you will not believe how much clear its air and waters are)

* Lundi isimli senede sadece 3 ay İzlandaya uğrayan PUFFIN papağanını görmek…

*See the parrot Puffin which comes to Iceland for 3 months during a year called Lundi

* Mayısta giderseniz özel gemilerle dev balinaları izlemeye gitmek…

*Go to see the giant whales by special ships if you ever visit the counrty in May

If you say, one day, I will go on my dream holiday with 1-2 thousand euros in my pocket and it doesn’t have to be so hot, but I should be able to enjoy nature and good food to the fullest as well as having so much fun by go out at nights, I recommend you to go to Iceland for a week or two in July…

Ömrüm yeterse ve diğer gezeceğim yerleri bitirirsem sanırım ben yine yapacağım…

Because I will if I can (after seeing the other places I havent seen).
